Hermann Vaske – Why Are We Creative?

JUNE 10 TO SEPTEMBER 3, 2025

Hermann Vaske – Why Are We Creative?

Opening on Tuesday, June 10 at 7 p.m.
Why are we creative? What makes an idea good? Where does the creativity of a genius lie? The question of the source of human creativity is as old as art itself.

For over 30 years, filmmaker, author, and curator Hermann Vaske has posed this question to eminent figures from the worlds of art, science, politics, and entertainment: Why are you creative? The answers are as varied as the people interviewed: Werner Herzog, Marina Abramović, Wim Wenders, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Quentin Tarantino, and many others have confronted this central question.

In this exhibition, Hermann Vaske presents a fascinating collection of statements, drawings, notes, and artifacts from his interviews with more than 1,000 prominent creative personalities. The presentation not only sheds light on the sources of creativity but also on its antagonists: self-doubt, censorship, and societal restrictions.

Premiering at the Goethe-Institut in Paris, the exhibition combines intimate reflection with a global perspective on creativity. Visitors are invited to address the question themselves: Why am I creative?
