Why Are We (Not) Creative?

Why Are We (Not) Creative: a dialectical synthesis of the opposites

The movie is a sequel to Vaske’s “Why Are We Creative”. While the first film seeks out and identifies creativity’s critical stimuli – Spirituality, Sex, Money, Fear, Nurture and Ambition – the new film „Why Are We (Not) Creative“ follows Hermann Vaske and his sidekick Michael Madsen on their mission to unmask and identify the idea killers. Together they analyze the oppositional forces that act as beta-blockers to creative energy – Censorship, Self-Censorship, Bureaucracy, Compromise, Distraction and the Gatekeepers – it’s an existential clash between creativity’s angels and its demons. The assassins of creativity are many and they lurk everywhere. And ironically, reasons for not being creative are often the triggers that motivate us to even greater creativity.

As Vaske says: “Today, for example, the Anthropocene period threatens our very survival. This existential threat, however, is also inviting us to explore new and disruptive ideas if we want to avoid disaster. Creativity may be under threat. But often, that threat is exactly what makes it thrive. A dialectical synthesis of opposites. It’s about time we put creativity on top of the pyramid.”
